Indonesian Dwarf Shrimp! 15.06.2010

Beside several crab species also some interesting Shrimp were imported to Germany from Indonesia by Aquarium Dietzenbach.

Named as Red Skunk Shrimp rellay large specimen (4-5cm!!) of Caridina gracilirostris are aviable. Due their large body size these specimen should be kept in large aquaria.

An other species of "Longnose Shrimp" inhabiting brackish estuaries is Caridina endehensis, sold as Green Stone Shrimp. This species could be distinguished from the so called Red Longnose Shrimp C. gracilirostris by the whitisch to yellow rostrum.

In brackish environment but also in fresh water Caridina serratirostris is living. Sold as Java Backline Shrimp or Red Miniline Shrimp the now imported specimen differ from the "typical" patched colour variant of this species in their reddish body coloration and a whitish line on dorsal margin of the abdomen. This coloration is known from the sibling species Caridina celebensis but the pictured specimen are conformed as C. serratirostris by a microscopical examination!

Exhilarating crab news 11.06.2010

Several newly imported species are distributed through Herbert Nigl from Aquarium Dietzenbach. Three spectacular species are available again but four more are new, never yet imported species.

Geosesarma sp. "Blue" (small picture left) have been imported again as the Lepidothelphusa sp. nov. (small picture in the midle). The Geosesarma sp. "Red Devil" (big photo) are quite fresh, but we presented them here already. All these three species are available again now.

Geosesarma sp. "Borneo red" could not be identified clearly yet. We could rule out  however that this is Geosesarma malayanum, which was found in a Nephentes-pitcher plant. We hope to identify the type soon. ADDENDUM: This is Geosesarma perracae (Nobili, 1903).

As "Crab Blue Arm" these crabs of species Thaksinthelphusa or Lepidothelphusa are noted on the stocklist – the name does not fit very well but they are very beautiful animals with a clear sexual dimorphism.

Also Thaksinthelphusa sp. "White Arm" is a newly imported species. Males (l.) and females (r.) differ clearly in this species either.

Thaksinthelphusa sp. "Chocolate" should not have been seen in our country previously.

Macrobrachium sp. sold as "Snowflake Shrimp" 31.05.2010

In a shipment of Snowflake Shrimp Arachnochium kulsiense we could spot some specimen of small Macrobrachium sp.. At moment it´s not clear whether these belong to an other small species or are juveniles of a larger species of Macrobrachium. Aquarium people should always be careful when buying new specimen for their aquaria to avoid surprises.

Interesting shrimp 29.05.2010

Mirco Geyer (Mr. Krabs) from Cologne has "Super Crystal Reds" in his breeding system which look promising. "That's where I want to go: Shrimp with only one or two white bands."

Also still int he back are his Caridina caerulea, which only last year were renamed in a 110-page revision of Kristina von Rintelen and Yixiong Cai (Raffles Bulleting of Zoology)  – before they were together with the more reddish animals described as C. ensifera. This species from Sulawesi's Lake Poso with its long blue rostrum is yet quite rare in aquaristics.
